Family Films and Healthy Dental Habits

The earlier you introduce kids to new things, the more likely they are to become comfortable with them. Sometimes the biggest struggle is figuring out how to do it. Movies have long been used as a great tool to share ideas, solve problems and introduce new concepts to children and adults of all ages.

Here are a few favorite family films with dentistry concepts sprinkled throughout.

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

This classic Christmas film certainly doesn’t bring to mind dentistry or even teeth. But, Hermey the Misfit Elf, Rudolph’s co-star in the film, sets off on a mission to become a dentist after deciding that making toys just wasn’t his passion. In fact, in the sequel, we discovered the school of dentistry he attends is run by the Tooth Fairy, and the two of them seem to develop a budding romance.

This 90s Disney film has been forgotten by many, but the story is a heartfelt journey to living the life you want for yourself. Kirstie Alleys stars as a dentist following in the footsteps of her father. Her dreams of being a loving, caring staple in the community are shadowed by her hardened heart after the death of her father. After getting hit by a car and finding herself in limbo, she inadvertently takes on the job of the Tooth Fairy in order to make her way to Heaven.

Finding Nemo

This well-known and well-loved animated film stars Nemo and his dad, Marlin. After Nemo is captured by a scuba-diving dentist, Marlin spends the rest of the movie overcoming his fears and trying to rescue him. Meanwhile, the audience gets a comical view into the life of a dentist office through the lens of a quirky group of fish in a tank. You’ll never look at a medical offices’ fish tank the same way again.
